Fires are one of the disasters that often occur in urban areas, especially in densely populated residential areas, buildings, and industrial zones.
In 2025, there were 1,195 fire incidents recorded in Jakarta, causing material losses and loss of life. These fire incidents indicate a number of unresolved issues that need to be addressed.
Among them are the implementation of fire prevention programs that have not been conducted optimally, early fire detection systems that have been installed but are not functioning properly, and a lack of human resources capable of effectively extinguishing fires at an early stage as an preventive measure.
Out of 1,195 fire incidents throughout 2025, 267 fires were managed by the community. He also appreciates the involvement of all elements of society in addressing fire incidents.
"The involvement of all community elements should be continuously improved to ensure that fire handling is carried out quickly, safely, and effectively," he added.
Therefore, the Jakarta Fire Safety Challenge is an important step to enhance the capacity and competence of emergency response personnel and the community in facing fire hazards. It is expected to foster a collective awareness of the importance of massive fire prevention and control efforts.
The participation of 440 volunteer firefighters from 44 district teams and 1,456 emergency response team members from 112 companies is concrete evidence of the commitment and concern to protect Jakarta.
This is expected to improve the competency capacity of Redkar and the building emergency response team to be more responsive and professional in facing threats and fire incidents.
In this event, the Governor also expressed appreciation to the Jakarta firefighters who have received outstanding public recognition.
The Jakarta government will continue to commit to strengthening fire prevention and mitigation efforts through the implementation of various regulations that have been enacted, as well as activities involving all elements of society. This step is expected to reduce the risk and impact of fires.
"Thank you to the fire rescue volunteers, emergency response team members, and other community members who contributed to handling the fire incident in Jakarta," he uttered.
Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat) Head, Bayu Meghantara, explained in his report that the Jakarta Fire Safety Challenge 2025 is participated in by 112 teams from building management in Jakarta and 44 teams from Fire Rescue Volunteer Members or Redkar at the sub-district level in Jakarta.
This event aims to enhance the solidarity, knowledge, and skills of participants in firefighting, rescue, and first aid for victims. The competition will take place over four days starting from September 15, 2025.
"This implementation of the activity involves the Damkar collaborating with institutions, certification bodies, professional organizations, fire protection agencies, and other associations," he stated.
